VMware ESXi and vCenter
VMware is the market leader in enterprise virtualization. Their solution creates a software-defined data center.
- ESXi: This is the Type 1 hypervisor. It is a tiny, purpose-built OS that does nothing but run VMs. It has a very small "footprint" to minimize security risks.
- vCenter Server: This is the management console. While you can manage a single ESXi host directly, you need vCenter to manage clusters of hosts. It enables advanced enterprise features like vMotion (moving a running VM from one server to another with zero downtime) and High Availability (HA).
