The Public Cloud Model

The Public Cloud: The Apartment Complex

In a Public Cloud, the cloud infrastructure is owned and operated by a third-party cloud service provider (CSP) and delivered over the internet.

  • Multi-Tenancy: This is the defining feature. Just like an apartment building where residents share the physical structure, elevators, and plumbing but have their own private rooms, public cloud customers share the underlying hardware (servers, storage) while their data remains logically isolated.
  • Economics (OpEx): Public cloud operates on an Operational Expenditure model. You pay only for what you use, when you use it. There are no upfront hardware costs.
  • Examples: Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud Platform (GCP).
