The Threat Landscape

Malware: The Malicious Software
Malware is a catch-all term for any software designed to cause harm. Understanding the specific types is the first step in defense.
- Ransomware: Encrypts a victim's files and demands payment (usually cryptocurrency) for the decryption key. It is currently one of the most prevalent threats to businesses.
- Trojans: Disguise themselves as legitimate software to trick users into installing them. Once inside, they can steal data or create a "backdoor" for attackers.
- Worms: Unlike viruses, worms do not need a host file. They are self-replicating programs that spread across networks, often consuming bandwidth and causing crashes.
- Spyware/Keyloggers: Silently monitor user activity, capturing keystrokes (passwords, credit card numbers) and sending them to the attacker.
