FSMO Roles
While most DCs are equal (Multi-Master Replication), there are 5 specific roles called Flexible Single Master Operations (FSMO) roles that must be unique.
- Schema Master: Controls updates to the schema (the definition of object types).
- Domain Naming Master: Controls the addition/removal of domains in the forest.
- PDC Emulator: Handles time synchronization and password changes for older clients.
- RID Master: Allocates pools of unique IDs (RIDs) to DCs to create new objects.
- Infrastructure Master: Updates references to objects in other domains.
